What does a 'High Hematocrit' mean when you have night sweats?
High hematocrit during perimenopause is typically caused by hemoconcentration due to chronic night sweats and fluid loss. This elevation means your blood is concentrated because your plasma volume is low, not because your body is overproducing red blood cells.

The next morning, you open your lab portal. You see the word High in red. It is next to your hematocrit levels. Your mind goes to the worst places. You think about blood clots and bone marrow cancer.
You feel like your blood is turning into sludge. It makes sense because you feel exhausted and heavy. You are scared because the internet says high hematocrit is a major red flag. You feel like a ticking time bomb.

Your red blood cells do not disappear. They stay in your veins. But now, they are floating in much less liquid. This is called hemoconcentration. It makes the percentage of red blood cells look much higher.
Hematocrit is a measurement of that percentage. If you have 50 red blood cells in 100 units of fluid, your hematocrit is 50%. If you sweat out 20 units of fluid, you now have 50 cells in 80 units.

If they suggest a bone marrow biopsy, stop. Ask for an Erythropoietin (EPO) test first. If EPO is normal or high, it is likely not a bone marrow issue. It is a reaction to your environment and hormones.

What is a waste of time
