What to tell your doctor

Demand a Cystatin C test. This is a different marker for kidney function. Unlike creatinine, Cystatin C is produced at a constant rate by all cells. It is not affected by muscle mass, exercise intensity, or protein intake.
If your Cystatin C is normal but your creatinine is high, your kidneys are healthy. Use the term 'clinical discordance.' This tells the doctor you understand that the two markers are giving different signals and the non-muscle marker is more accurate.
Ask for a 'spot urine protein-to-creatinine ratio.' This looks for actual protein leaking into the urine. If your kidneys were truly failing, they would leak protein. If there is no protein in your urine, the high blood creatinine is likely harmless.
Do not let them dismiss you with a 'wait and see' approach if it causes you anxiety. Insist that the standard eGFR formula is known to be inaccurate for athletes. Use the phrase 'muscle mass bias' during your consultation.
What is a waste of time
Kidney 'detox' teas and supplements are useless. They are usually just diuretics that make you pee more. They do nothing to improve kidney filtration or lower creatinine levels. They only empty your wallet and potentially dehydrate you further.
Cutting out protein 'just to see' is a mistake. If you are healthy, high protein does not damage kidneys. Restricting protein will cause you to lose muscle mass, which is your most important asset for metabolic health and longevity.
Taking time off the gym for two weeks just to get a 'clean' lab result is a temporary fix. It doesn't prove your kidneys are healthy; it just hides the evidence of your active lifestyle. You need a test that works with your life.
Avoid expensive 'functional medicine' panels that claim to look at kidney health through obscure markers. Stick to the gold-standard clinical tests like Cystatin C. Most 'holistic' kidney supports are unproven herbals that can actually stress the kidneys.
Do not panic over a single reading. Creatinine fluctuates based on hydration, what you ate for dinner, and how hard you trained the day before. A single data point is not a diagnosis. Trends are what matter in clinical medicine.
What actually works
The Cystatin C blood test is the only definitive way to clear your name. It provides a true GFR that ignores your biceps. If this number is above 60, your kidneys are filtering perfectly regardless of what the creatinine says.
Aggressive hydration is mandatory. Dehydration concentrates creatinine in the blood, making the levels look worse than they are. Ensure you are drinking enough water to keep your urine pale yellow at all times, especially before lab work.
Monitoring blood pressure is critical. High blood pressure is the leading cause of real kidney damage. If your blood pressure is consistently below 120/80, your risk of actual kidney disease is extremely low, regardless of your lab numbers.
